How We Test Products

Every product recommendation on Gladewick is earned through real testing under real home conditions — not press releases, spec sheets, or brand-supplied information. This page explains exactly how our product review process works, from acquisition to publication.

Lead Reviewer: Melissa Torres, Phoenix AZ
Products tested since 2017: 400+
Melissa Torres, Gladewick Product Reviewer

Our product reviews are led by Melissa Torres, a home and garden product reviewer based in Phoenix, Arizona, with 8 years of experience evaluating household products, appliances, and garden equipment. Before joining Gladewick, Melissa spent five years in retail merchandise buying for a regional home improvement chain in the Southwest, where she developed a rigorous understanding of product quality, manufacturing standards, and true value-for-money across hundreds of categories. She has personally tested over 400 products since 2017. View Melissa’s full profile →

1Our Testing Philosophy

Home and garden product reviews on the internet suffer from a fundamental problem: most of them are written by people who either never tested the product at all, tested it for an afternoon in ideal conditions, or wrote the review based on manufacturer specifications and user reviews scraped from Amazon. None of that tells you what you actually need to know — how the product performs in a real home, under real conditions, over a meaningful period of time, compared directly against its competitors.

Gladewick’s testing philosophy is built on three non-negotiable principles:

Real Home Conditions

Products are tested in our reviewer’s actual home — not a sterile lab or controlled test environment

Meaningful Duration

Testing periods are long enough to reveal performance issues that only appear with sustained use

Complete Independence

Brands and advertisers have zero input into our testing methodology, scoring, or editorial conclusions

Our promise to you: A Gladewick product recommendation means that a qualified expert tested the product in their own home, evaluated it against all relevant criteria, compared it against competitors, and concluded — without commercial influence — that it is genuinely the best or one of the best options available for the intended use case.

2How We Acquire Products for Testing

How a product is acquired for review affects our relationship with the brand and our potential for bias. We operate with full transparency on product acquisition and disclose the source of every reviewed product within the article.

Products purchased independently

The majority of products we test are purchased independently — either by Gladewick directly or by the reviewer. When products are purchased independently, there is no relationship with the brand and no expectation of coverage. The brand is not notified that we are reviewing their product. This is the purest form of review and produces the most unbiased results.

Products provided by brands for review

Some products are provided free of charge by manufacturers or PR agencies for review. This is a standard practice in consumer product journalism. When a product is provided by a brand:

  • The review article carries a clear disclosure: “This product was provided to Gladewick by [Brand] for review purposes. This did not influence our editorial conclusions.”
  • The product is evaluated using exactly the same methodology, criteria, and testing duration as a purchased product
  • Receiving a product for free does not guarantee positive coverage — we have published and will continue to publish unfavourable reviews of brand-provided products
  • Brands do not receive advance copies of reviews, do not have input into our conclusions, and cannot request changes before publication

What we don’t do: We do not accept payment from brands in exchange for reviews or for positive coverage. We do not accept products with conditions attached — no brand can specify how a review must be framed, what it must include, or what rating it must receive.

Acquisition disclosure labels

  • “Independently purchased” — bought by Gladewick or the reviewer without brand involvement
  • “Provided by [Brand] for review” — supplied by the manufacturer or their representative
  • “Long-term use” — the reviewer has used this product personally over an extended period

3The Testing Process — Seven Stages

Every product we review goes through a consistent seven-stage testing process before a single word of the review is written.

1

Product selection & acquisition

We identify the product based on reader demand, category significance, and our reviewer’s professional assessment of which products genuinely warrant testing. The product is acquired by purchase or accepted from a brand with no conditions attached.

2

Unboxing & first-use documentation

The reviewer documents the out-of-box experience: packaging quality, assembly requirements, clarity of instructions, and initial impressions of build quality and fit and finish. Any first-use issues are recorded at this stage.

3

Structured real-world testing

The product is used under the real-world conditions it is designed for — in Melissa’s Phoenix home, or in the relevant outdoor or garden environment. Testing conditions reflect those of a typical US homeowner, not controlled laboratory conditions.

4

Duration & sustained-use evaluation

Testing duration varies by product category — see Section 5. The goal is to test long enough to reveal issues that only emerge with sustained use: motor wear, battery degradation, material fatigue, and ergonomic problems over extended sessions. We do not publish reviews based on single-day testing.

5

Competitive comparison

Where possible, the product is tested alongside direct competitors in the same category and price range. This comparative testing is what allows us to make meaningful recommendations — it is not enough to say a product “works well” if a competing product at the same price works significantly better.

6

Scoring against evaluation criteria

After testing is complete, the reviewer scores the product against the standard criteria for the product category (see Section 4). Scores are recorded before the review is written — the writing flows from the scores, not the other way around.

7

Review written & submitted for independent expert review

The review is written based on documented testing notes and scores. It is then submitted for independent expert review by a second Gladewick specialist. The review is not published until this independent review is complete. See Section 7 for details.

4What We Evaluate — Scoring Criteria

Every product we review is evaluated against a consistent set of criteria that reflect what actually matters to a US homeowner making a purchase decision.

25%

Performance

Does the product do what it claims to do, to the degree it claims, under real-world conditions? This is the primary criterion for most product categories.

20%

Value for Money

How does the product’s performance and quality compare to its price? Is it genuinely worth what it costs relative to available alternatives?

20%

Build Quality & Durability

Does the product feel and perform like something that will last? Are materials, construction, and finish consistent with the price point?

15%

Ease of Use

Can a typical homeowner set up, operate, and maintain this product without specialist knowledge? Is the learning curve reasonable?

10%

Safety & Compliance

Does the product include adequate safety features? Does it meet relevant safety standards for its category? Are safety instructions clear?

10%

Features & Design

Do the product’s features add genuine value, or are they marketing additions? Is the design thoughtful for real-world use?

The weighting above is our default framework. For specific product categories, criteria weightings are adjusted to reflect what matters most for that product type — for example, battery life receives greater weight for cordless tools, and noise level receives greater weight for indoor appliances.

5Testing by Category

Different product categories require different testing approaches, minimum durations, and category-specific criteria. The table below describes how we adapt our methodology across the main product categories we cover.

On climate conditions: Our primary tester Melissa Torres is based in Phoenix, Arizona, which means garden products, outdoor power equipment, and heat-sensitive products are tested in a hot, arid climate. Where relevant, we note that performance in more humid, cold, or variable climates may differ, and we draw on the relevant category specialist — Emily Carter in Portland for Pacific Northwest gardening, Steven Clark in Columbus for Midwest lawn conditions — to supplement our evaluation.

6How We Write the Review

After testing is complete and scores are recorded, the reviewer writes the article. Our review writing standards are as rigorous as our testing standards.

What every product review must include

  • Product acquisition disclosure: How the product was obtained (purchased or provided by brand)
  • Testing duration and conditions: How long the product was tested and under what conditions
  • Specific performance findings: Concrete, measurable observations — not vague generalisations like “works well” or “feels sturdy”
  • Honest weaknesses: Every product review must identify genuine weaknesses or limitations — even for products we ultimately recommend
  • Who it’s best for: A clear statement of which homeowner type, skill level, or use case this product best suits
  • Competitive context: How the product compares to at least one direct alternative
  • Value assessment: Whether the product is priced fairly relative to its performance and whether a cheaper alternative delivers comparable results

What we do not write

  • Reviews that restate the manufacturer’s marketing language without independent verification
  • Reviews based solely on Amazon star ratings or user review summaries
  • Reviews that suppress negative findings to maintain a brand relationship or affiliate commission
  • Reviews written to rank for search terms with no intention of being genuinely useful to a reader making a purchase decision

7The Independent Review Step

Like all Gladewick content, product reviews undergo an independent expert review before publication — performed by a second specialist who did not write the review and was not involved in the testing process.

How reviewers are selected for product reviews

  • Power tools and DIY products are reviewed by Rob Callahan, our licensed electrician who owns 200+ tools and uses them regularly in professional projects
  • Lawn care products are reviewed by Steven Clark, our Turfgrass Science specialist who has applied and evaluated lawn care products professionally for 14 years
  • Garden products are reviewed by Emily Carter, our horticulturist who grows 60+ plant varieties and has direct experience with gardening tools and amendments
  • Kitchen appliances are reviewed by David Harrington or Rachel Simmons, who have direct professional experience evaluating kitchen products for renovation projects
  • Smart home devices are reviewed by Kevin Park, our BSEE-qualified smart home technology writer who uses these products daily in his own integrated home
  • Paints and wall products are reviewed by Marcus Webb, our professional painting contractor who has evaluated paint products commercially for 11 years
  • Flooring products are reviewed by Patricia Walsh, our flooring specialist who has installed and evaluated flooring products for 13 years

The reviewer’s role in product reviews: The reviewer evaluates whether the testing methodology was appropriate for the product category, whether the performance conclusions are consistent with what a professional in that field would expect, and whether any significant testing limitations should be disclosed to readers. The reviewer can require additional testing, additional disclosure, or changes to performance conclusions before the review is published.

8How We Handle Brand-Provided Products

The relationship between product reviewer and brand is one of the most scrutinised areas of consumer product journalism. Here is exactly how Gladewick manages brand-provided products to protect editorial integrity.

What brands can and cannot do

  • Brands may send products to Gladewick for review consideration
  • Brands may provide technical documentation to help us test accurately
  • Brands may correct factual errors in a review after publication via our Corrections Policy
  • Brands may not request to see a review before publication
  • Brands may not request changes to conclusions, ratings, or language
  • Brands may not make product provision conditional on a positive review
  • Brands may not pay Gladewick for a review or for positive editorial coverage

9Updating & Re-Testing Products

Product reviews are not static. Products change, new versions are released, and the competitive landscape shifts. Our review update policy reflects this reality.

When we update a review

  • New product version released: We evaluate whether the changes warrant a full re-test or a targeted update to the existing review
  • Significant competitive change: When a new product performs significantly better than our current top pick, we update our buying guide accordingly
  • Reader-reported long-term performance issues: When multiple readers report performance degradation we did not encounter in original testing, we investigate and update accordingly
  • Price change: When a product’s price changes significantly, we update our value assessment
  • Product discontinuation: We update the review with this information and recommend the best current alternative

How updates are labelled

All material updates to product reviews carry a “Last Updated” date change and a note within the article indicating what changed and when. We do not silently alter review conclusions — if our rating of a product changes, we explain why. This transparency is part of our Corrections Policy.

10What We Don’t Do

It is equally important to be clear about the practices we explicitly reject — practices that are common in the product review industry and that we believe undermine reader trust.

  • We do not write reviews without testing the product. Every product we review has been physically used by our reviewer under real conditions for a minimum test period. We do not publish roundups of untested products.
  • We do not use Amazon reviews as a substitute for testing. Aggregating user reviews is not the same as independent professional evaluation. We verify our own findings and do not allow user sentiment to override our direct testing observations.
  • We do not publish affiliate roundups of untested products. Product lists on Gladewick represent products we have actually evaluated. We do not create lists of 10 products with affiliate links where only one or two were tested.
  • We do not rank products higher based on affiliate commission rates. Our rankings reflect testing performance. A product with a 1% commission rate is ranked above a 10% commission product if it performs better in testing.
  • We do not suppress negative reviews. If a product fails in testing, the review reflects that. We have published and will continue to publish unfavourable reviews, including of products sold by our affiliate partners.
  • We do not use AI to generate review content. All review writing is done by our human reviewers based on their direct testing experience and documented observations.
